SOUTH Dragons have abandoned their pursuit of former Melbourne Tigers guard Dave Thomas, but could have a player with NBA experience signed by today.

Needing a replacement for import guard Cortez Groves, the Dragons http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,21985,24792336-10914,00.html','','resizable=no,location=no,menubar=no,scrollbars=no,status=no,toolbar=no,fullscreen=no,dependent=no'))" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">had identified Thomas, cut last week when the Cairns Taipans went into administration, as an obvious target given his knowledge of the NBL and their offence.

But the Dragons decided they could not risk signing Thomas, who played in two NBL championships with the Tigers, while he is yet to recover from a medial knee ligament injury.

"He's not in the mix," Dragons co-owner Mark Cowan said yesterday.

"Dave's a great player and he knows our system and he knows Australia, but we had some concerns over his injury.

"There was a question mark over his fitness and we weren't comfortable with it.

"We were upfront and we had some discussions with Dave and we told him we were looking elsewhere."

The Dragons (15-4) hope one of two options comes to fruition today, enabling them to have the player registered and available to play against the Townsville Crocodiles at Hisense Arena on Saturday night.

"There are a couple of names that might be exciting to basketball people," Cowan said.

"One of them has some NBA experience from not that long ago. It could be exciting. It would be nice to get a real excitment machine at that position.

"We want to finish in the top two and it would be nice to supplement the talent we've got with another quality import."

i really dont think we need a PG as Gibson and Carter are more than capable so i guess a sf or sg is better suited.

Yeah it is almost becoming to much to bear lol. I really think that they will have to do it today or tommorow. I think tommorow. Let's just hope that he can be registered in time. In another site it was said that this player averages 25 points per game. That would be really nice.

"OK. Small Forward.

In the league he is leaving, he's averaging 29.5 points, 12.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.2 steals per game. 49% Field Goal shooter, 30% 3 point.

That's all I'm giving anyone."

That's what someone 'in the know' said.

Yea its not very clear there but it has been posted on the Hoops SA website that Dontay Jones who plays in the Chinese League is coming to play for the dragons seemed a bit Darden like in the way he plays, could be very interesting for us.

Wow he must be good, he has a wikipedia page. http://www.asia-basket.com/player.asp?Cntry=CHN&PlayerID=6661 look at some of his numbers, has had quite a few 30 point game, 1 46 pointer and even a 54 point game!

Interesting to note, Bonzi Wells had 48 points in his first Chinese league game yesterday.
