Ingles

204cm Joe Ingles will guest at his junior club for matches against woodville and Sturt.

BOTI NAGY March 28, 2009 12:30am ALREADY bolstered by new faces, imports and NBL stars, the State Basketball League receives another shot in the arm this round with Olympian Joe Ingles returning to Southern Tigers. Ingles, 21 and 204cm, will guest at his junior club for matches against Woodville tomorrow night at Brett Maher Court and next Saturday at Morphett Vale Stadium against Sturt. The latter is sure to be a "standing-room only" affair in the Tigers' Lair as last week's first home game featuring new American forward John Morris brought fans out of the woodwork. And that was for a loss to Eastern. Ingles and Morris together presents a prospect to salivate over for local basketball junkies. "If I can help get some more people along to the games, that'd be great," Ingles said last night. "It's been about five years since I played for Tigers and we had some great battles back then with Sturt and North." Ingles will revisit Sturt next week before returning to Melbourne and heading on to Chicago on April 9 for a month of work-outs. "I'm nominating for the NBA draft," he said, the SBL matches with Southern a chance to maintain his match condition. A regular junior state representative for SA, Ingles has not played with his old club since 2004, taking up an AIS scholarship in January, 2005. He made history as the first player signed by the NBL's new Melbourne-based South Dragons franchise for the club's 2006-07 big league debut. "Jingles" opened with 29 points for the Dragons against New Zealand – the highest scoring debut by an Australian in the NBL's 31-year history – and went on to claim the league's Rookie of the Year award. Selection for the AllStar game in his rookie season also sits on his resume. Selection for the Boomers at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games almost naturally followed. Ingles did his NBA prospects considerable good with 11 points in 10 minutes in the 85-116 loss to the eventual gold medal-winning U.S. team. He stroked a perfect 3-of-3 three-pointers and threw down a trademark southpaw tomahawk dunk on the NBA's finest. Two weeks ago he also reached the pinnacle of the game in Australia when he was part of the Dragons' 2008-09 NBL champion. It makes returning to South an appealing prospect if opportunities do not pan out with the NBA or in Europe. But the 36ers also are not off the free agent's radar. "The future is such an unknown for me at the moment," he said. "I'll hopefully get some team work-outs (in the U.S.) and then I'll go to a camp at Treviso in Italy." The NBA obviously is Ingles' target, with joining players such as Brad Newley, Matt Nielsen and David Andersen in Europe his secondary option. The new-NBL is his third. "I've been with the Dragons for three years now and I met with them the other day," he said. "There's a pretty good chance I'd go back there if the NBA and Europe don't work out but I know Adelaide is interested in me as well. "Like I said, it's an unknown what the future holds for me just now." Unknown but exciting. For now, there's a couple of SBL fixtures to focus on with his old team-mates such as Shane Boal, Tristan Braithwaite and Phil Brown. "I'm really looking forward to it," he said. yeah i dont know about that so much. i thought Joe would progress so much more under goorj, but instead he seems to have been held back a bit. might be the case of the 'sam mackinnon' all over again. apparently in his early days Sam hated goorj cos he worked them too hard. didnt realise the quality of goorjs coaching til later down the track. dont know what the deal is really..

wouldnt mind getting to a few big V games. anyone know where Gibbo/wortho are playing in the off season? i know there's a few boomers games going on so maybe not anyone?

Wortho isnt playing in off season, ill try find out about Gibbo.

Also Ingles stepped up a level in the first half of year but then plato'd do you think?

They say Gorjian brings the best out in players but maybe Ingles could get an advantage under a coach like Rob Beveridge  for a year,Ingles went to the Institute so could have been trained by him already?

yeah i dont know. hard to say with Joe. i think a lot of it could be that he was use to having to 'carry' the team for the last 2 seasons, and now its not all about him.  i would have liked to see how he went playing under Goorj for another year. i dont think he could handle sitting on the bench all game in an NBA team, he always seems so hyperactive.

just my 2cents worth anyways...
